The Long Goodbye - A photographic essay

The Long Goodbye is an ongoing personal project about a north London community (Tottenham) at the heart of gentrification.

Since 2011 when Tottenham was the epicentre of the London riots, the area has seen a significant influx of investment money with new developments around Tottenham Hale now catering for hip young, independent professionals. A brand new football stadium is said to be the new landmark fo the area, drawing in tourists and football fans alike.

As a resident of the area for around 15 years, I have followed the changes first hand. Through interviews and environmental portraits, I explore my personal relationship with an area I call ‘home’ and seek out to depict how longterm residents feel about the environmental changes around them and whether - or what - has changed for them over the last few years.

The project is centred around the West Green Road, one of of the few streets that has so far retained its foundation of traditional local shops, despite the fact that new multi-storey developments and tower blocks are now enclosing this street from all angles.

With this project I am returning to my urban cultural studies roots, a passion that has significantly shaped my photographic and visual outlook.

The series will be released as a photographic essay in 2020.
